The Tlhokomelo Story: From Passion to Purpose
At the heart of every great brand is a story—a journey filled with passion, resilience, and purpose. Tlhokomelo was born from such a journey, shaped by the desire to empower communities and celebrate African craftsmanship.
From Social Work to Leather Craftsmanship
Tlhokomelo’s founder, Paulina Mokhothu, began her professional journey in social work, a field dedicated to empowering individuals and uplifting communities. However, after moving from Lesotho to Kenya, she faced challenges finding opportunities in her profession. This led her to explore alternative ways to create impact.
Her entrepreneurial spirit took her to local craft markets, where she sourced and sold handmade goods. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for leather craftsmanship. Determined to bridge the gap between traditional African artistry and modern design, she pursued formal training in leather product design and development.
Paulina saw a unique opportunity—Kenya exports over 90% of its leather in semi-processed form, yet local artisans struggle to access quality raw materials. Recognizing the potential for job creation and economic transformation, she founded Tlhokomelo, a brand that blends sustainability, craftsmanship, and African heritage into high-quality leather accessories.
More Than Just a Brand—A Movement
Tlhokomelo is more than a leather brand; it’s a platform for impact. Every product is crafted by skilled local artisans, ensuring fair wages and sustainable employment. The brand also collaborates with women’s groups weaving sisal, ensuring that traditional skills are preserved and passed on to future generations.
By combining heritage-inspired designs with eco-conscious practices, Tlhokomelo is redefining African luxury—one handcrafted piece at a time.
